Eight swimmers took to the water for the SCST at the Schroeder Aquatic Center for the
2008 WI Swimming Senior State Championships held 2/28-3/2. While many other teams
brought larger contingencies with them, SCST was very efficient with the swimmers they
had, finishing 8th overall in Division II with 190 points . Competing at the state meet
for the SCST were Nate Johnson (17, Delavan), Alex Riegert (15, Delavan), John Sedgwick (
21, Janesville), Nick Hazekamp (17, Janesville), Alex Loftus (14, Janesville), Egemen
Gozoglu (18, Turkey), Kevin Schneider (15, Delavan), and Nick Strub (14, Janesville).
Johnson lead the way with three top-8 finishes, including a bronze medal effort in the
200 Breaststroke (2:14.53), a 5th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.71), and a
6th place finish in the 400 IM (4:20.66). Riegert added to the medal haul with a 5th
place finish in the 50 Freestyle (:22.39), and 7th in the 200 Breaststroke (2:20.91).
Also bringing home a medal was Sedgwick with a 6th place finish in the 200 Butterfly
(1:59.75).
The quartet of Johnson, Riegert, Sedgwick, and Hazekamp combined to form five scoring
relays. They dropped 14 seconds from their seed in the 800 Freestyle Relay to get 13th
place with a time of 7:19.21, swam to a 10th place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay
(1:30.13), and to three 9th place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay (1:39.34), 400 Medley
Relay (3:38.51), and the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:17.97).
These four, along with Loftus, set numerous team records throughout the course of the
meet. Sedgwick set team standards in the Senior 100 Free (:49.76), 50 Butterfly
(:25.23), 100 Butterfly (:54.09p), and 200 Butterfly; Johnson in the Senior 200
Breaststroke (2:14.17p) and 400 IM; Riegert in the 15-16 200 Breaststroke (2:18.20p) and
200 IM (2:04.65p); Hazekamp in the Senior 50 Backstroke (:25.50) and 200 Backstroke
(2:00.84p); and Loftus in the 13-14 200 Breaststroke (2:33.32).
All eight swimmers swam at least one best time at the meet.
The Green Bay YMCA took the Division II Team title with 633 points, followed closely by
the Wausau Tide (613), and the Fox Cities YMCA (556) rounding out the top three.
Winning the Division I and overall title was the Waukesha Express Swim Team with 3,345
points, blowing away the D-I and overall second place Badger Aquatics Club (2,130.5).
The Lake Country Swim Team rounded out the top three in D-I with 1,531.5 points.
The SCST scored more points than four of its D-I counterparts, proving that you don’t
have to be a big club to be successful.
